Can A Skylight Cause Water Damage in Your Phoenix Home? Yes, It Can.

Skylights are a great addition to your Phoenix home. The added natural sunlight makes your home brighter and feels more spacious. However, if your skylights start leaking, it can take all the beauty of them away and replace it with various problems. You can even be looking at severe damage to your property. Leaking skylights need to be fixed as soon as possible to minimize this damage and to keep the leak from getting larger.

Professionals should also be used to install your skylights to ensure they are put in correctly, but even then, things can still go wrong. Water damage from a leaking skylight in your Phoenix home can be surprising, but don’t hesitate to act fast to correct the issue. Hiring our experienced staff at SERVPRO to clean up the water mess left behind is the smart thing to do. We have all the tools to get the job done right and in a timely fashion, avoiding additional problems, such as mold growth.

In a situation like this, we may need to take a look at water-soaked carpeting. Our primary goal when restoring water damages is to protect and preserve your structure and its contents. One of the first concerns is carpeting and padding. The construction of carpet presents two fundamental problems – latex deterioration and backing separation, or delamination.

Carpet always has a primary and secondary backing. Latex is the material that adheres and holds the carpet fibers to the primary backing. It also holds the secondary and primary backings together. SERVPRO techs realize that latex begins to deteriorate once the carpet is installed. It can break down from gases in the air, plus sunlight and traffic.

There are several grades of latex. The higher ones contain additives which slow the process of breakdown. Less expensive latex compounds have fillers to take up space, however, offer no adhesive properties. The more fillers there are, the less adhesive power there is, and the sooner breakdown happens. The process causes a separation of the two backings which is known as delamination. It usually appears in the form of bubbles. High traffic areas are more likely to delaminate.

We look out for this pre-existing conditions when we are restoring your home from water damage. We often discover it when we pull the carpet up, and it, unfortunately, cannot be fixed. The carpeting may need to be replaced if the damage is severe enough.
