The Time to Prepare Your Home for Monsoon Season is Now

3/2/2022 (Permalink)

Upcoming monsoon storms can leave behind plenty of storm damage so preparing your home or commercial property beforehand makes perfect sense; the sooner the better. Microbursts can uproot trees of any size, and outdoor furniture and play equipment can get blown up against the house, into the pool, or into a window. Monsoon season in Arizona is only a few short months away, so review your home and property now to protect your home. Below are things you can do to protect your property from storm damage.

Secure Trees to Prevent Storm Damages

One of the most common hazards that occurs during a monsoon storm is the uprooting of trees. We’ve all seen our neighborhood after a big storm with huge trees toppled over, often into brick walls or the side of houses. Even larger branches that snap off can do considerable damage. Not only can this cause more damages to your property, but it can also cause some serious danger if nearby power lines are affected. Be sure that all your smaller or newly planted trees are double staked, and your more mature trees trimmed to eliminate broken branches or possibly toppled trees.

Check Window and Door Seals

Now is a good time to go through your home and inspect all the windows and doors for any spaces or gaps where water and dirt can seep through. If you see any space within the frames where the seal is, it’s time to replace that weather stripping. Even the smallest amount of water can come in and cause mold growth which can spread around and will require professional mold remediation and removal. Replacing the weatherstripping will also prevent warping from water as well as dust from getting inside and settling in the house.

Inspect Your Roof for Issues

Get up on your roof (or have a roofing professional do it for you) and look for any loose shingles or tiles. This should be done regularly throughout the monsoon season even if you get the all-clear prior to the storms arriving. Strong storm winds often displace shingles and tiles which leave the property vulnerable to the storm elements that could cause even more damages, such as water seeping through into your home.

Check Around Your House for Issues

Sometimes the worst damage homes experience is from pooling water after an excessive storm. If large amounts of water tend to drain towards your home instead of away from it, or pools near your house’s foundation, it’s time to rectify that before storms hit to keep water away from your home. Also look around for larger items that can be upended during strong monsoon winds, which can be extremely powerful and capable of picking up objects from the ground and slamming them against your home. Make note of what needs to be secured or put away prior to storms rolling in.
